Othertimelines

Moved from User talk:Nik

Hi, I'm new here and I just recently began my own work titled New Roman Empire. It's basically about if Mussolini decided to continue his conquest of Africa during WWII. Anyway, I am having some serioud writers block. If anyone has the time and is feeling helpful, would you mind reading my summary and then maybe add some new material to it to help me make it over my problem. I will look it over and decide if I like it.

Thanks Much! -Drew aka Sagalicious

This is Crisco, from an Alternate History site named Othertimelines.com.

The members of my site occasionally have a little bit of fun by starting what we call "Warboards", in which we pick an era and a country, and generally fight the biggest war that we can.

We've had a few good ones that I was thinking we could stick on here (complete with country descriptions, etc), but since it's more for entertainment purposes rather than a serious, well-planned althist, I figured that I should ask someone around here first, rather than having the full weight of an admin land on my head.

If there's a problem with it, please message me (or contact me somehow) so I can delete it and know not to put any more on. Right now, the only one I've done is Othertimelines: Eye of the Storm.

Thanks, Crisco

I think it would fit, but I want to hear other reactions. We already have Transbellum, which goes beyond the traditional idea of althist. What do others think? Nik 07:29, 3 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I think that these stories could be made to fit by just a little further extraction to the causes...as we know, wars are fought over the damnedest things... Louisiannan 02:04, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Featured althist

Why aren't we featuring althists?

The Way I see it, since all articles are arranged in different timelines, featured articles wouldn't make sense and would seem random. If the featured article one week was Mexico (Toyotomi) and the next was Mexico (New Albion), it would be confusing to visitors.

Featured althists however... --cymra37

This wiki is definitely big enough to warrant a featured page or twenty. I agree that this is a terrific idea. Cprhodesact 05:36, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I know it's a big job for just the few of us, but maybe we could have a featured althist every month and a featured article (from any althist) every week. Or just the monthly featured althist, which shouldn't be too much trouble. --Riction 06:17, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
If you'd like to spearhead it, I'm more than happy to support you in it. I'm even fine if you want to pick one at random every month. Louisiannan 23:31, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Check out the current Sandbox for my take on a Main Page with a monthly althist. --Riction 12:24, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

This looks fantastic! New Main Page is great! Well done! Cprhodesact 00:06, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Will the featured althist be changed every month? --TEAKAY 11:00, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

It should be. I haven't set the one for October, and neither has anyone else to my knowledge. I think you've done a lot of good work on "Ætas ab Brian", so I'm sure you can put that one forward if you want. I chose the first featured althist, and I don't know how future ones will be chosen. I just created a "Featured October" template. It's set as the same as September's, but feel free to change it (keeping it a pretty similar size) to a suitable page for next month. And I guess anyone else who would like to discuss this can here or, maybe better yet, at the discussion page for the template. --Riction 12:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
How is it changed? I would suggest Viva California be the October featured althist --TEAKAY 15:33, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
Here is what the template for October's featured article could look like. --Riction 15:17, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Looks *just a bit* lopsided. ;) --TEAKAY 19:16, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Now it's fixed (not by me)--Max Sinister 23:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

November Nomination

I would like to suggest Cabotia and Brasil, as it's one of the more expanded and longer standing althists. Louisiannan 15:37, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I made the Template:Featured November page, making it Cabotia and Brasil. By the way, December is my "birthmonth", so I'd like to nominate Vegetarian World as the featured althist for then. Here is the page for December. - Template:Featured December -Riction 15:15, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

The "featured Althist" doesn't seem to have attracted the attention I had hoped for. Very few non-originator contributions were made. I don't know if its because some feel skittish about getting involved in other peoples' timeline or just a lack of interest. Maybe a "suggestion welcome" message could be put in the box or something to that effect--Marcpasquin 18:10, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

I like that idea, Marc. Louisiannan 00:06, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

What should January's featured althist be? And should we make a page to specially discuss future featured althists? --Riction 05:13, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to nominate my Day of Glory timeline for january and invite those who might be interest to "adopt" a country.--Marcpasquin 08:50, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

That's fine by me. If you want to, you can create Template:Featured January, basing it off pages like Template:Featured December and November and such. --Riction 05:09, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
done Template:Featured_January--198.142.52.52 07:24, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

I support that we get a new page specifically made for this purpose. We could also make a page with all the older featured TLs. And while I'm at it, I suggest my Chaos TL as the next featured TL.--Max Sinister 14:49, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I created a page for the featured althists. For any more discussion about monthly featured althists, please see the Alternative History:Featured Articles List page.

Future althists?

Can we have althists that will happen in the future, like in 2041, or something? 67.171.69.150 22:07, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

The Way I see it, if you don't want to keep working on an althist for the rest of you life, you can end it by providing future information. An althist into the future starting now is more like a prediction or projection. --cymra37
So...is it acceptable? KFan II 02:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

No. On the Main Page it sayd that all althists have to have a POD in the past. --A Guest

Too bad there isn't a future history wikia. I'd like to place a future.--C II R 00:52, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey, you could be the one to make one. You can request a certain page (say, "Alternative Future Fiction") from Wikia, and since this one got approved, yours might, too. If you do make one, let us know! --Riction 02:21, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
The wikis at imagine or future might be good places to do this. Angela talk 03:47, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Is an althist on Star War acceptable, since everyone knows that it took place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away"? RandomNerd

No, for the following reasons.
  1. It's copyrighted material
  2. It's science fiction
  3. The Alt-histories here generally deal with Earth and its immediate stellar neighborhood. Louisiannan 00:04, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Very very nice site! And please visit my forum :) {spam deleted}

AAAAAAAAAAUGH! A spammer!! Get the spray!!!--TEAKAY 02:02, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

WHHAAAT?! What is your problem! Are you the same guy as last time?! Need SPAMINATOR --TEAKAY 14:03, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Uuuuh, Im new but can it be in somwhat future but still have all the history stuff that was changed and all that?{{SUBST:User:Airiph/sigx}} 02:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

no, anything beyond the current date is not acceptable on this wiki. --Marcpasquin 13:04, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Flag creation

I'm new to the wiki, so I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I would really appeciate it if someone would create a flag for the República Desierto. I would like it to be yellow, with a red canton. Please leave a message on my talk page when you're done. Thanks in advance, ςפקιДИτς 03:27, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

How a new national version can be open?

What should we do if we want to open new russian+ukrainian+siberian (common east-slavic) version of the alternative history wiki? --YaroslavZolotaryov 22:00, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Just fill in a wiki request form at Wikia.(The new way to request a wiki is at requests.wikia.com Angela talk 07:21, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I would make a Dutch version, is it good for everyone? Jonas Windsor 18:07, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
That's fine as long as you think you can find some other people to edit there. Angela talk 18:48, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Clean up

all right this site needs a big clean up! Theres Alternatives that are entirely impossible (i.e. Homo Pterix). We need 2 make them actualy seem real! as what would happen if it did happen! Not just giving a funny idea and adding it, with no info on how it could happen, that should go Uncyclopedia.

You're certainly raising an interesting issue here, this place does need a clean up. I came across many articles that really don't make sense and should simply be deleted if the author doesn't show any interest in turning his idea in a proper AltHist. I'm willing to do some cleaning when I can find the time, so I'm going to apply for sysop status now. I don't agree with your statement about Uncyclopedia though, bad ideas don't belong there either, in fact the quality demands there are quite high, most newly made articles are simply deleted.
p.s. You can sign your posts with four ~'s.
Villa Cruoninga 16:22, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
What is 'Pterix'? --TEAKAY 23:48, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
A former "AltHist" containing two paragraphs on winged humans that controlled the universe if I recall correctly. --Karsten vK (talk) 16:34, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I see Ó_o --TEAKAY 20:57, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I agree with signing your posts, and I agree with cleaning up. Villa Cruoninga, your request is taken under advisement, and we'll let you know soon. Louisiannan 00:48, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

To all contributors

I would just like to encourage all contributors to to read through the featured Althist and try to, well, contribute something. Maybe just think of what subjects interest you particularly and give a suggestion. --Marcpasquin 07:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

slight problem

the bar of text that is supposed to appear at the bottom of a page keeps appearing in the middle, covering some of the text, I tried on 2 computers and keep getting the same result. --Marcpasquin 08:52, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

From what I can see this is a problem with Internet Explorer, Firefox displays it properly. I'll contact Wikia to see what they can do about this. --Karsten vK (talk) 18:10, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Apparently updating IE solves the problem. --Karsten vK (talk) 17:26, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
And it appears they are working on it.. --Karsten vK (talk) 15:02, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

...and solved the problem. Is if solved at yours too? --Karsten vK (talk) 17:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

yup, all good --Marcpasquin 04:24, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Another Slight Problem

This is all juvenile, pointless nonsense, and tarnishes the WIKIPEDIA ideal. There are plenty of places on the web to discuss rubbish like this, but Wikipedia should not be one of them. Once again, the nerds are taking over.

Look closer, this is NOT Wikipedia. --Karsten vK (talk) 20:06, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Moreover, look closer still, this is hosted by the same people that came up with Wikipedia. Louisiannan 20:28, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
The Wiki format is the best for making things like this. It sure beats posting threads. You just mistook this site as being actually part of Wikipedia itself right?--TEAKAY 13:31, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

German Version

I'm surprised that this wiki doesn't have a German version. Anyone mind if I go ahead and create it? And would anyone be interested in helping with it?

Here's a prototype I've sketched out--Tabun1015 17:40, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Also, I'm not a native speaker, so if there are any native German speakers here, or people who are otherwise fluent, I would especially appreciate your help.--Tabun1015 17:44, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
First off, this is still me (I changed my username). I went ahead and created it here. If anyone knows how we can bring the format (e.g. the logo) in line with the other versions, and how to add it to the "in other languages" sidebar and section, please leave a message on my talk page or here --Witan 13:48, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Are you planning on translating some of the basic pages also ? (like "Conventions in use in this wiki" or "what is alternate history")--Marcpasquin 14:41, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes. I've already sketched out the Conventions in use in this wiki, and plan to flesh out other sections later on (as my free time permits).--Witan 15:19, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Please add {{wikia:Creative}} to the bottom of the main page, and de-protect it. --Yunzhong Hou

We've protected it due to vandalism in the past...shouldn't Wikia sysops like Angela, etc. still have access to adjust it, if need be? Louisiannan 13:54, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Can somebody help me find a way to make a map

Do you mean to be able to make one on your own or have someone else draw it?--TEAKAY 11:48, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Question? Just visited the German Page and was quite surprised as there is sth. called "Prog" currently inserted...As the authors there told me Wikia told them to insert there concept of a new Wiki (creating plantes, worlds etc.) into the German AHwiki site as to promote it... Already questioned the sense of this respectively asked for further details from Sysops (also you, Villa, Maxsinister:) but received no answer... Would someone be so kind and give a few more details about this as I wonder if the German version of althistory wiki is still "alive"?? Thought about translating the 1983: Doomsday content into German... Thanks a lot for any answer !!! --Xi'Reney 17:23, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
